Professional Studio Blank Cassette Tapes
Professional studio cassette recording demands tapes calibrated to tighter tolerances, with higher output levels, lower noise floors, and more consistent magnetic coating than consumer-grade stock. This collection focuses on the tape formulations that were specified and used in professional recording contexts - broadcast facilities, mastering studios, and high-end home recording setups with top-tier three-head decks.
The defining pro studio tape types include Type II high-bias formulations such as TDK SA-X, Maxell XLII-S, and Sony Metal ES-II - tapes that pushed the high-bias standard to its absolute limits - and Type IV metal formulations including Sony Metal Master, TDK MA-XG, and Maxell MX-S. For multi-track Portastudio recording on TASCAM and Fostex equipment, high-bias Type II tapes running at double speed (3.75 ips) were the studio standard throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
