TASCAM Blank Cassette Tapes

TASCAM is the professional audio division of TEAC Corporation, established to develop affordable recording equipment for musicians, broadcasters, and home recordists. TASCAM's defining contribution to music history came in 1979, when TEAC launched the TEAC 144 PORTASTUDIO - the world's first four-track multitrack recorder using a standard cassette tape. The 144 was described by Billboard and Pro Sound News as "the most revolutionary product in history," transforming professional-quality multitrack recording from a studio-only privilege into something any musician could do at home for under $1,000. Bruce Springsteen's 1982 album Nebraska was recorded on a TASCAM 144.

TASCAM Portastudio decks run at double speed - 3.75 inches per second - and record all four tracks in a single pass direction. This means a C-60 tape yields only 15 minutes of usable recording time. The recommended tape for Portastudio use is high-bias Type II in C-60 format, with brands including TDK SA, Maxell XLII, and BASF Chrome Plus all historically specified. TASCAM also produces their own 424-S studio cassette: a high-bias cobalt Type II tape engineered and tested specifically for Portastudio recorders, delivering approximately 4 dB higher output than standard Type II cassettes with high coercivity and retentivity optimized for multi-track studio use.

Portastudio Tape Requirements

Always use high-bias (Type II) tape in Portastudio decks. Ensure write-protect tabs are intact before recording. C-60 format is preferred over C-90 for better tape tension and mechanical reliability at the higher transport speed.
